The main objective of this study is to understand the professionalization process of management in family-owned businesses in the milling industry in the city of Chiclayo. For this study, a descriptive-qualitative research approach was used. In terms of methodology, in-depth interviews were conducted with the owners of 5 selected mills. The selection of these companies was at the discretion of the researcher, based on criteria including a minimum of 10 years of operation, involvement of both first and second generations, and the presence of family members working within the business. The findings reveal that none of the 5 companies have a succession plan in place. However, they are informally preparing and providing university education to the future successors. Additionally, only one company has chosen to hire an external manager, while the remaining four companies consider this step necessary but have not yet made a decision on hiring. None of the companies have established family protocols. In conclusion, family-owned businesses are implementing professionalization in an informal manner by training future leaders and heirs. They do not seriously consider the inclusion of external managers, except for one company, and they lack the establishment of the relationship between the business and the family.
