Resumen
La presente investigación se centra en la importancia de la sonrisa en la estética facial, destacando su impacto en las relaciones sociales y la percepción de belleza. El objetivo principal fue comparar la percepción estética de la exposición gingival de la sonrisa en estudiantes universitarios en Piura en 2024. Para ello, se seleccionaron 240 estudiantes de las carreras de Estomatología, Medicina, Arquitectura y Traducción e Interpretación, mediante un muestreo aleatorio simple. Cada estudiante evaluó seis fotografías con diferentes niveles de exposición gingival utilizando una Escala Visual Análoga (EVA). Las imágenes fueron modificadas digitalmente para representar exposiciones gingivales de 0 mm, 0.5 mm, 1 mm, 1.5 mm, 2 mm y 2.5 mm. Los datos recopilados fueron analizados mediante métodos estadísticos descriptivos y comparativos, utilizando pruebas de normalidad para determinar diferencias significativas entre grupos. Éticamente, el estudio aseguró la confidencialidad de los participantes y la comprensión de su participación en el estudio por medio de un consentimiento informado. Los resultados encontrados fueron que no hubo diferencia estadísticamente significativa de acuerdo a la comparación de la percepción estética de la exposición gingival de la sonrisa según sexo, además que según edad y carrera universitaria hubo preferencia por la sonrisa con exposición gingival de 0 mm.
This research focuses on the importance of the smile in facial aesthetics, highlighting its impact on social relationships and the perception of beauty. The main objective was to compare the aesthetic perception of gingival exposure in the smile of university students in Piura in 2024. To this end, 240 students from the Dentistry, Medicine, Architecture, and Translation and Interpreting programs were selected using simple random sampling. Each student evaluated six photographs with different levels of gingival exposure using a Visual Analog Scale (VAS). The images were digitally modified to represent gingival exposures of 0 mm, 0.5 mm, 1 mm, 1.5 mm, 2 mm, and 2.5 mm. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive and comparative statistical methods, using normality tests to determine significant differences between groups. Ethically, the study guarantees the confidentiality of the participants and their understanding of their participation in the study through informed consent. The results found were that there was no statistically significant difference according to the comparison of the aesthetic perception of the gingival exposure of the smile according to sex, in addition according to age and university degree there was a preference for the smile with 0 mm gingival exposure.
