Breast cancer causes significant changes in the lives of women because it is associated with death or mutilation, which is why the moment in which they receive this diagnosis is crucial, but there are few qualitative studies in this regard. The objective of this investigation was to describe, analyze and understand the experiences faced with the initial diagnosis of breast cancer in women attending a hospital in Chiclayo, 2023. A qualitative methodology with a descriptive design was used, 12 women with breast cancer were interviewed. The sample size was determined by saturation and redundancy. To collect data, a semi-structured interview guide was used, which was processed using thematic content analysis technique. The results are grouped into four categories: a) Initial reaction and feelings towards the diagnosis, b) Acceptance of the diagnosis and decision to start treatment, c) Family, social and work support and difficulties at the beginning of the diagnosis, and d) Care and changes in lifestyles. If it is concluded that women experienced an initial negative reaction, but with the support of family and friends they managed to accept the diagnosis and begin their treatment, the need for personalized psychological support and humanized treatment when giving this type of diagnosis stands out. It is recommended to implement psycho-spiritual support programs, as well as follow-up via telehealth.
