Barriers to self-care in older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus directly affect their ability to control their disease and avoid complications, making them vulnerable to poor self-care. This research was conducted with the aim of describing and analyzing the perception of barriers to self-care in older adults with type 2 diabetes at a health center in Chiclayo, 2025. It was a qualitative study with a descriptive design. The population consisted of 190 older adults, the sample size was 12 older adults, and it was determined according to the criteria of saturation and redundancy of codes; the sample was non-probabilistic for convenience. A semi-structured interview guide was used for data collection. Data analysis was performed by thematic content, and three categories were obtained as results: a) Barriers related to diet, b) Barriers related to physical activity, c) Social and emotional factors that affect self-care. It was concluded that self-care among older adults with DM2 is conditioned by barriers that, taken together, reveal a gap between knowledge and the real possibility of putting it into practice. This reflects that disease control does not depend solely on individual effort, but also on a family and community environment that provides sustained support to promote adherence and improve quality of life.
