Resumen
La calidad del sueño y la somnolencia diurna se han descrito como factores relevantes en el rendimiento académico de los estudiantes universitarios. Objetivo: Determinar la relación entre la somnolencia diurna, la calidad del sueño y el rendimiento académico en estudiantes de la Universidad Católica Santo Toribio de Mogrovejo durante el semestre 2023-II. Metodología: Estudio cuantitativo, correlacional y transversal. La población estuvo conformada por estudiantes matriculados en el semestre 2023-II; se incluyó una muestra de 740 participantes, calculada mediante diferencia de proporciones. Se utilizaron el Índice de Calidad del Sueño de Pittsburgh y la Escala de Somnolencia de Epworth. El rendimiento académico se obtuvo a partir de las calificaciones finales, clasificadas como muy bueno, bueno, regular o deficiente. Resultados: No se encontró asociación significativa entre la calidad del sueño y el rendimiento académico, ni entre la somnolencia diurna y el rendimiento. Los estudiantes con somnolencia moderada o grave presentaron probabilidades similares de buen rendimiento académico en comparación con aquellos sin somnolencia. El análisis de mediación y moderación no evidenció efectos significativos de la calidad del sueño ni de la somnolencia diurna sobre el rendimiento académico; sin embargo, se observó una asociación significativa entre la calidad del sueño y la somnolencia diurna (p < 0,001). En contraste, la facultad de procedencia se asoció significativamente con el rendimiento académico (p < 0,001).
Sleep quality and daytime sleepiness have been described as relevant factors in academic performance among university students. Objective: To determine the relationship between daytime sleepiness, sleep quality, and academic performance among students of the Universidad Católica Santo Toribio de Mogrovejo during the 2023-II semester. The population consisted of students enrolled during the 2023-II semester; a sample of 740 participants was included, calculated using the difference of proportions. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale were used. Academic performance was obtained from final grades and classified as very good, good, fair, or poor. Results: No significant association was found between sleep quality and academic performance, nor between daytime sleepiness and academic performance. Students with moderate to severe daytime sleepiness showed similar probabilities of good academic performance compared with those without sleepiness. Mediation and moderation analyses showed no significant effects of sleep quality or daytime sleepiness on academic performance; however, a significant association was observed between sleep quality and daytime sleepiness (p < 0.001). In contrast, faculty affiliation was significantly associated with academic performance (p < 0.001).
