Introduction: University life is a risk factor for developing psychopathologies, psychology students present 11% of mental pathologies, including personality disorders (PD), being moderately vulnerable to these. The coexistence of PD with other psychiatric comorbidities aggravates their prognosis and quality of life, resulting in poor academic performance, dropout, and impairment of future professional practice. Research has determined factors associated with types of PD, but not in a general context; and this important population in the mental health field should be studied. Therefore, the objective was to determine factors associated with the presence of PD in psychology students at a private university in Lambayeque, Peru-2023. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted with a random sample of 177 psychology students of semester 2023-II stratified according to academic year. The MCMI-IV was used and the results were analyzed with the SPSSv.29 program using multivariate logistic regression to determine the association. Results: 49.2% of the participants presented some PD. First year was the second largest stratum and the proportion of those who presented PD was predominant. A psychiatric diagnosis was present in 18.6% of the students. The multivariate analysis suggests a significant association (p<0.05) between the presence of PD with being in the first year (OR: 6.23) and having a psychiatric diagnosis (OR: 2.90). Conclusion: The findings revealed a worrying proportion suggestive of pathology in the studied population, and it was significantly associated with being in the first year of studies and having a diagnosed psychiatric history. It is necessary to implement diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for the benefit of the student community.
