Aim: To identify the characteristics of psychoactive substance use among secondary school girls in a national school in Chiclayo in 2023. Materials and Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study. Out of 1,286 students, we worked with a sample of 308 students who met the selection criteria. A two-stage stratified random sampling was conducted. Two questionnaires were used: a self-designed survey and the ASSIST test. Results: Lifetime prevalence of substance use was 56.2% for legal substances, 11.7% for illegal substances, and 14% for medical substances. Among the students who consumed substances, 73.3% were between 14 and 16 years old. A total of 25.1% of users were in the second year of secondary school, and no progressive increase in prevalence was observed according to the year of study. Among caregivers, 58.7% had a primary or secondary education level. Problematic alcohol consumption and frequent tobacco use were the most common family-related characteristics (27.3% and 15.5%, respectively). More than half of the students who consumed substances reported having experienced violence at school or at home. The most commonly used substances were alcohol (56.2%), sedatives (14.0%), tobacco (13.3%), and inhalants (9.7%). Students exhibited a moderate-risk consumption pattern for all these substances. Conclusions: The prevalence of psychoactive substance use, both legal and illegal, was high. Three out of four users were between 14 and 16 years old. Family alcohol and tobacco consumption was also high.
