Compassion fatigue in emergency nurses is a highly relevant phenomenon, as continuous and direct contact with the suffering of patients and their families can lead to profound emotional exhaustion. The objective of the research was to describe, analyze, and understand how compassion fatigue is perceived by nurses in the emergency department of a public hospital in Chiclayo, 2025. Materials and methods: A qualitative approach with an exploratory design was used. The population consisted of 47 emergency department nurses who met the established inclusion and exclusion criteria. The sample size was determined by saturation and redundancy of codes, and the sampling was non-probabilistic and intentional. Semi-structured interviews were used, and the data collected were processed using content analysis. The research was based on ethical principles and scientific rigor. Results: The following categories emerged: I) work environment with emotional ties accompanied by pain and suffering; II) internalizing the emotional burden of caring for critically ill patients: risks and limitations; III) reducing emotional fatigue with viable strategies integrated into the care routine; and IV) rebuilding emotional balance in the face of compassion fatigue after the workday. Conclusions: The research showed that constant exposure to suffering requires great empathy and, when combined with the limitations of the work environment, promotes compassion fatigue. However, emotional support, spirituality, and self-care are essential resources for mitigating it and preserving professional well-being.
